The Corporation of the Township of Val Rita-Harty is working towards becoming a fully accessible municipality and offering accessible services and programs by removing and preventing barriers that could hold back any member of the public from participating in community life.

The Township is committed to and will continue to making its services and infrastructure accessible to people of all abilities. Val Rita-Harty strives to ensure integration, independence, dignity, and equal opportunity for all of our community members.

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (A.O.D.A) was enacted in 2005 with the goal of making Ontario Accessible by 2025. The A.O.D.A. consists of five standards which guide employment, information and communication, transportation and the design of public spaces.

In accordance with these AODA standards, the Township of Val Rita-Harty has developed an Accessibility Plan to help identify and prevent barriers for persons with a handicap using municipal services or establishments.

Legislation & Policy

The Province of Ontario developed accessibility standards for all private, voluntary and not-for-profit organizations. The five area standards of accessibility are: Customer service, Information and communication, Employment, Transportation and Design of public spaces (built environment). Accessible Customer Service Standard

The Accessible Customer Service Standard, Ontario Regulation 429/07, is the first accessibility standard to be adopted under the authority of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005.

This Ontario law came into force on January 1, 2008 and states what businesses and other organizations in Ontario must do to make the provision of their goods and services more accessible to people with disabilities.

Under the Accessible Customer Service Standard the Corporation of the Township of Val Rita-Harty is required, by law, to develop and maintain policies, practices and procedures specially addressing:

  • Accessible Customer Service
  • Accessible Customer Service Training
  • Alternative Format Documents
  • Assistive Devices
  • Availability of Documents
  • Customer Feedback
  • Notice of Temporary Service Disruptions
  • Service Animals and Support Persons
